Caterpillar cakes may be the staple at most children’s (and many adults’) birthday parties, but often cannot be enjoyed by those on restricted diets.

However, Asda have just launched a brand new ‘free from’ chocolate caterpillar so that everyone can have a slice.

Aptly named ‘Frieda’ the ‘Free From Caterpillar’, the delicious looking cake is made from chocolate sponge and is filled with a “rich, frosted filling”.

Freida is in good company as in 2017 Tesco announced they had changed the recipe for their version of the famous caterpillar cake, ‘Carl the Caterpillar’, to make it dairy and gluten-free.

Price

Specialised dietary treats can occasionally be expensive, but Frieda costs just £6.25 – which is only 25p more than Asda’s ‘traditional’ Bonnie and Clyde caterpillar cakes, so it won’t break the bank.

Not vegan-friendly

If you or your guests are vegan however, the cake unfortunately should still be avoided as eggs are listed as an ingredient. The cake is also not suitable for those with a soy allergy as it lists soya as an ingredient.

Where to buy

The cake is not available in all Asda stores yet, but they have helpfully provided a list of where you can find it, if you’re planning on making a special journey to pick up your own.

You can also pick it up online if you’re doing a shop ahead of the big day, which may be the best way to avoid disappointment.
