Owned by Sarah Lock, Harbourside Gluten-Free Takeaway recently opened on the Plymouth Barbican, two doors down from the award-winning Harbourside restaurant. Due to the high demand for gluten-free food that Sarah received at her restaurant, she decided to open a new, gluten-free shop nearby, eliminating the risk of cross-contamination.

The fully gluten-free kitchen offers favourites such as halloumi, chicken bites, battered sausages and pineapple fritters alongside the traditional fish and chips. This food can then be brought to the Harbourside restaurant so that coeliacs are able to eat with their families and friends.

Speaking to Plymouth Live, Sarah explained that ‘if you’re a coeliac you always worry about cross-contamination.’ She said: ‘My friend’s son is a coeliac and for the first time he was able to come in and have a meal with his family and share food.’

Sarah bought the site in February, began to renovate the building and held a soft opening at the end of April. The official launch of the fish and chip shop will happen in mid-July, when the full renovation is finished.
